Introduction

Plants contain complex substances, which are often referred to as the ‘essence’ of the plant. They assist the plant to grow, evolve and adapt to its surroundings by defending it from insects and diseases. Essential oils are the extracted essence of the plants; the concentrated liquids are extracted by various methods, for example, expression, steam or water distillation, enfleurage or solvent extraction. Essential oils are the base material of the Aromatherapist and they are powerful plant based medicines which should be used with precaution and by following safety guidelines. Not all oils are safe to use with everyone and they should never be ingested.

What do they do?

Each essential oil has its own therapeutic benefits; working on the mind, body and spirit. For example, everyone knows that lavender can be helpful to induce sleep. That’s because it has sedative effects and it calms and relaxes. But it is also a powerful analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant, anti-bacterial, decongestant, insect repellant, antiseptic, anti-parasitic and it also restores unbalanced states, of the mind and body.

How do you apply them?

There are many methods of application; massage is the main method, allowing for a relaxing treatment by which the skin absorbs the oils into the blood stream. Other methods include use in the bath (in a suitable carrier), creams and lotions, facial oils, diffuser, inhalation and compresses.

How did essential oils help me?

My health had become a battle ground! Struggling through a quagmire of hormonal imbalance, distress and pain. Something had to change and my doctor even admitted that modern medical options weren’t working for me. Now this isn’t the case for everyone and I am not about to damn modern medicine. Complimentary therapies can work alone or in conjunction with traditional medical approaches. The important thing, is to find a solution that works for you and that you are happy with. If you ‘buy in’ to your treatment, then it is more likely to have a positive effect on your emotional and physical well-being.

So for me, finding a natural approach to my health needs, was ‘essential’! Essential oils, with weekly massage treatments from an Aromatherapist, gave me some much needed self care and someone to talk to and they helped me to identify the issues that needed addressing. I made adjustments to my diet and life style and started to use the oils in between treatments. Baths and diffusers became my friends! Most of all I started to gain control and became more insightful, about how I was feeling and how I could manage my symptoms. I now had ‘essential tools’ in my box. Once you’ve met an Aromatherapist, you will understand the inside joke that ‘they have an oil for everything!’ If lavender has so many uses, you can imagine the arsenal that an Aromatherapist has at their disposal!

How do I use essential oils to help you?

Massage

I love the science of Aromatherapy and I love working with people to identify their difficulties and formulate a solution, using all of my skills, from working as an Aromatherapist, Occupational Therapist and a Swedish Holistic Massage Therapist. Spending time with you before your treatment is essential to build a relationship with you, but to also identify exactly what your priorities are and how best to tackle them.

Using essential oils in all of my massage treatments gives an added dimension and something unique to what would be potentially be an ordinary massage treatment. Essential oils can for example, detox the body, target specific issues, such as your muscular aches, pain or inflamed joints, as well as helping to lift your mood, or reduce your anxiety.

So if you attend for a treatment with me you will receive a truly holistic package that will meet all of your needs, leaving you feeling that you’ve been listened to, understood, physically and psychologically rebalanced and have strategies for managing your health conditions.
